Funding for the National Water Sports Centre
You may have heard, on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 the Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews announced $3 million in funding for improvements to the National Water Sports Centre (NWSC). More details in the attached media release below.
A big thank you to our club members and supporters, especially the ETU who have worked very hard for many years to achieve this funding for a much-needed upgrade of the facilities at the NWSC. We thank the government for this funding and a big thank you to the two local members, Tim Richardson (member for Mordialloc) and Sonya Kilkenny (member for Carrum) who along with Lee Tarlamis (Victorian Government Senior Advisor) have been strong supporters of the need to improve the NSWC and lobbied hard for this funding. The funding will not only benefit our club but all the NWSC user groups and the community.
MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BOOST TO PATTERSON RIVER PRECINCT
The Andrews Labor Government is improving access to the National Water Sports Centre in Bangholme near Carrum Downs as part of upgrades to the precinct that will boost visitation and create jobs.
Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Environment Lily D’Ambrosio, Member for Mordialloc Tim Richardson and Member for Carrum Sonya Kilkenny at Melbourne Cable Park today to announce $3 million to support a number of key priorities identified in the Patterson River Concept Plan.
Priorities identified include sealing the access road, improving the Carrum Lilydale Bike Trail, creating a new walking track under the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and building a new recreational building.
The scope of works may include removing old buildings and infrastructure, creating new pathways, and better security lighting and signage – transforming the precinct around the Sports Centre forever.
Extensive community consultation was undertaken, with more than 900 locals responding to a survey asking them how they would like to see the area developed.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is currently going through this feedback to help create a Draft Plan for developing the area.
Communities across the City of Kingston and City of Greater Dandenong – as well as all clubs, groups and users of the river – will be engaged to learn more about how the area can be improved.
For more information go to Concept Plan.

This is great news for the club and all users of the NWSC. The funding announced will support staged upgrades of the NWSC facilities and is expected to include access roads, walking and bike paths, improved toilet facilities and other communal facilities etc. We are also lobbying for the ability to build our own clubrooms and improved storage facilities.
The club had a large contingent of boats and members on hand for the announcement – it was an impressive display.
Thanks heaps everyone!

In the foreground from left to right are: Sonya Kilkenny, Member for the State Seat of Carrum, Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy and Suburban Development, Member for Mordialloc, Tim Richardson, The Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews and VDBC Club Member, Allan (Al) Day. In the background are the Mayor of the City of Dandenong, Mr. Youhorn Chea and Councillors, Mr. Jim Memeti and Mrs. Angela Long together with Victorian Government Senior Adviser, Lee Tarlamis.
Al was in his element providing the Premier with technical detail about the drag boats on display and how the top fuel hydro boats in the US reach speeds of 268 miles per hour and cover 1,000 feet in 3.3 seconds. Al highlighted how Silver Bullet is an Alcohol Hydro Class Drag Boat with a 540 cubic inch V8 engine providing over 3,000 horse power. The Bullet’s best speed, with a smaller capacity engine, was clocked at 186 miles per hour covering the quarter mile strip in 6.7 seconds from a standing start.
Al didn’t quite manage to convince the Premier to take a ride.
Pictured below with the Silver Bullet from left to right are: Wendy Howie, Rowan White, Shannon Crundwell, Allan Day, Graeme Watson and Steve Baird. Seated in the boat giving the thumbs-up is the Member for Mordialloc, Tim Richardson.
We have been in discussion with colleagues in the US to stage an Australian versus US Challenge at the NWSC. The State Government announcement regarding upgrading of the facilities will help make this possible, potentially as early as 2019.
We thank our club members and supporters, especially the ETU who have worked very hard for many years to achieve this funding for a much-needed upgrade of the facilities at the NWSC and we thank the government for this funding. A big thank you to the two local members, Tim and Sonya who along with Lee Tarlamis have been strong supporters of the need to improve the NSWC and lobbied hard for this funding. The funding will not only benefit our club but all the NWSC user groups and the community.
